Always A Home Game in Washington DC

For the second pre-season game we followed the Steelers to Washington DC where they played the Redskins. Instead of trailing them the whole way to the stadium, we of course visited three of the best Steelers hangouts around Washington DC, Southside 815, The Mighty Pint and Pour House.

Our first stop was Southside 815 located in Alexandria, VA. Upon walking in the door we were immediately greeted by eager Steelers fans! Josh Miller took some time to sign autographs then took photos and talked to fans with Shawn Allen. The walls were lined with Steelers memorabilia and the owner pointed out one very special can at the bar that he said started the Steelers theme at Southside 815. Time flew by and before we knew it we were off to stop number 2, The Mighty Pint.

The Mighty Pint is located in Washington DC and was decorated with black and gold balloons on every table plus plenty of Steelers and other Pittsburgh sports souvenirs along the walls. The Always A Home Game crew was accompanied by 2 special guests at the Mighty Pint, former Steelers Keith Gary and Mike Collier.

We also grabbed a bite to eat, Abbey and Shawn went with the pierogies and Josh said the fish tacos were the best he ever had!

Our final destination was the Pour House located right in the Capitol, we knew we were there when we  saw the Steelers flags hanging outside. The 3-story tavern was filled with Steelers fans for the game and they told us that even more show up for regular season games.

They gave us a tour of the historic building which previously held a crematory in the basement and even took us back into the kitchen to learn how they make pierogies.

Our next stop is Kansas City...see you there!

On our journey to visit 100 Steelers hangouts across the country we know that we are going to meet hundreds of fans! And that is a huge part of what Always A Home Game is all about! But, we also know that there would be no fans without the legendary Steelers that started it all! It's "Always a Home Game"

In the 1970s and '80s, tens of thousands of Pittsburgh natives moved away and migrated to cities from coast to coast. But they never forgot their allegiance to their favorite black and gold football team. On game days you'll find these avid fans at their local watering holes, in cities big and small, cheering on their "home team."

Who are these loyal die-hard fans... and where are they? Former Steelers punter Josh Miller and "everyday" fan Shawn Allen are about to find out. During the 2013 football season, they will travel all across America to pay game-day visits to 100 bars that have a strong Pittsburgh fan base.

The story of the Great Steelers Country Road Trip will be told in Miller and Allen's upcoming book, Always a Home Game TM. Filled with photographs and interviews, it will take sports fans far and wide into these game day celebration, and feature former players, their post-Steelers lives and where they are today.

With support from the Pittsburgh Steelers football team and the Steelers Charities, Miller and Allen will be filming, interviewing and handing out souvenirs during every game. Meanwhile, back at sold out Heinz Field, the Jumbotron will show live feeds of their visits with these passionate former Pittsburghers. Time to wave hello to old friends and family back home!
